Rich in its history and heritage, Griffintown has seen many eras scroll by.
Formerly run by the Sisters of the Lord’s Hotel under the name “Nazareth Fief,” Griffintown is one of the first neighborhoods to have developed away from the city center. This is Mary Griffin, after whom the district was named, who would become the city’s owner and an advocate for its development. She and her husband are building low-cost housing for workers and are themselves owners of a factory.
It was in 1847 that the area experienced major growth with the arrival of 100,000 Irish immigrants seeking refuge from the famine. They quickly populated the area, which became an important industrial district. They worked to build the Victoria Bridge, the Lachine Canal, and the railway tracks.
In the early 20th Century, when the city experienced an economic downturn, many factories closed their doors. At that time, the oldest industrial center in America began to experience an exodus of its residents. Today, Griffintown is going through a renaissance.
District Griffin is a series of residential projects that will not only see the building of more than 2,000 condos, but also revitalize and gentrify the entire neighbourhood. The revitalization plan is to redevelop the public domain and rethink the urban landscape in order to give life to a clean and attractive environment. The cultural, artistic, and historical heritage will be honoured with the restoration of the urban center and public space.
Choose District Griffin, which is opting for a rapidly changing neighbourhood full of charm and vitality. Located near the city center and surrounded by services, District Griffin is a real neighbourhood with a promising future. A life for you.
